Microwave Oven gaining acceptance among Indian Households

In new product development one finds very few totally new-to-the-world products, most of the products we see as new products in the market place are the new improved versions of the older products. Microwave oven is one those few products which would fall under the classification of new-to-the-world products. The discovery of the product itself was more out by accident than by design. According to wikipedia " Cooking food with microwaves was discovered by Percy Spencer while building magnetos for radar sets, he was working on an active radar set when he noticed that a peanut chocolate he was carrying in his pocket started to melt".

Microwave as a product has become a high growth segment in Indian market only recently, initial launches very not very successful, but with the changing lifestyles and family structure the product is finding more and more acceptance among Indians. Another reasons given is the fact that microwave cooking is not suited to Indian way of cooking , and with the changes made by manufactures to incorporate additional features to accommodate our cooking styles has also lead to its increased acceptance. The projected production of microwave oven sin the country is set to touch 1 million next year.

  1. Yes, I believe that one of the main reasons for the rise in Microwave usage has been the increaing change in the urban lifestyle with people wanting faster and less-messier ways to cook food. The booming economy has also helped this cause a lot.

  2. Sir, there is an interesting point about the marketing strategy of Ivory Soap of P&G. It was the first soap that could "float" in water. But more interesting was their ad "99.44% pure". Though it is written that it was just a result of their experiment of a university and that P&G wanted to show how pure their soap is, that is not the exact truth.

The makers knew that their soap was the purest soap they had got, but they felt that "100% pure" would not be a good idea to sell as that would mean exaggeration of things. So they sent it to the lab to find the exact purity of the soap and used it as they felt that this accuracy would appeal to the consumers more thatn the "100% tag". It did and Ivory is perhaps one of the oldest brands in existence - over 125 years old!!!

I don't know where I got this information from, but it was from a trusted source, as a part of a quiz we were making in college. I wanted to make this point in class but it would have been put of the context.

  3. that is a very interesting insight on the brand, infact as I was emphasizing many things which were done by P&G have gone on to define the basics of marketing, especially in Brand Management in the earlier days and more recently things like there collaboration with Walmart on information sharing with retailers has redefined the way the relations between retailers and manufactures is seen. Infact the library has a very good book "Rising Tide" on the P& G story, but i didn't refer it there because it is issued in my name so i didn't want you people to go into the library and find that it is issued on my name -:)). I will write a small review on the significance of P& G and marketing some time later talking inputs from the book. In the book there is a complete chapter on Ivory..
And whenever you feel you have something to share with the class do share it, let the class decide whether it is relevant or not , maybe it would have raised the interest on many people on the branding initiatives of P&G
